If the car goes on strike and cannot be brought back to life on-site, there are only two options: Either you get professional help and call a towing service like Jack’s tow and trailer truck (แจ็ครถยกรถลาก which is the term in Thai) for instance or take action yourself. But a car in tow to take is a chapter in itself. For this reason, fixed rules have been issued that must be observed in every case.

A car breakdown is nerve-wracking. But it should stay that way. There are some crucial rules to be observed to avoid damage to the vehicle, not to endanger other road users, and not to come into conflict with the legislature. In many cases, the towing process begins with finding the thread for the towing eye. It is hidden behind a plastic cap on most new vehicles for optical reasons, which must be carefully removed with a screwdriver. The towing eye is usually in the trunk of the vehicle tool kit.

Rope Or Rod?

Commercially available nylon ropes are best suited for towing. They stretch and therefore absorb jerky movements. However, the rope must not be longer than eight meters, ideally five meters, and must be made visible to other road users by a red flag in the middle. Professional breakdown helpers always use tow bars. They are the safest but also the bulkiest and expensive, regardless of whether with rope or rod, the permitted tensile force must not be exceeded. Before setting off, experts recommend that both vehicle drivers agree on communication signs or contact them via mobile phone to stay.

Time 30 Or 40?

The approach must be carried out carefully, and the rope must always be kept taut. Basically: 40 km / h is the absolute upper limit when towing. When towing with a rope, however, the maximum speed limit should be 30. Otherwise, the man behind will find it difficult to avoid the collision in the event of an emergency braking.

The hazard warning lights may be switched on, but changes in direction must then be indicated by hand. Both vehicles must have the rear lights or emergency lighting switched on in the dark. The gear is taken out of the car to be towed. Specialists point out that vehicles with automatic transmissions or four-wheel drive may not be towed in many cases. It is advisable to take a look at the operating instructions. In any case, the ignition key must remain in the ignition lock so that the steering wheel lock does not click into place. A cautious driving style is required because the brake booster is switched off when the engine is switched off, and the power steering does not work. Steering and braking are associated with a significantly higher expenditure of force.
